Gynaecologists in India

A gynaecologist treats the female reproductive system and gives care through pregnancy and childbirth, including period problems, PCOS, infertility and menopause.

Seeing a gynaecologist

Understand reproductive health consultations and prepare for a conversation about your concerns and choices.

What this professional does

Gynaecology concerns reproductive and sexual health. Obstetrics concerns pregnancy and birth; many doctors work across both, but not every clinic provides the same services.[1]

Concerns within their scope

Concerns can include painful or heavy periods, changes in the menstrual cycle and pelvic pain. These symptoms can have different causes; the guide cannot identify one for you. A general physician can also be a starting point and advise on specialist assessment.[4][1]

When a routine consultation may help

Seek a consultation when period problems interfere with daily life or you are concerned about changes in your cycle. A symptom diary can make the pattern easier to explain. Describe new symptoms when arranging care so the clinic can assess urgency.[4]

What to expect at a visit

Expect a conversation about the concern and relevant medical history. Ask what any proposed examination involves and why it is needed. If referred specifically for colposcopy, this is a closer examination of the cervix; it is not part of every visit.[3][2]

Prepare for your consultation

Bring previous reports and write down relevant dates, symptoms and questions. Tell the team about communication or comfort needs. Ask about options, how results will arrive and who to contact between visits.[2]

Questions you may have

Is colposcopy the same as a general consultation?

No. It is a specific examination of the cervix, usually following a referral. Read your appointment instructions and ask if the purpose is unclear.[3]

Can I request support during colposcopy?

Yes. Discuss a chaperone or support person with the team and tell them about anything that may make the examination difficult. You can ask for it to stop.[3]
